About Group A Streptococcus

Group A streptococcus (GAS), the bacteria that causes "strep throat," is the most frequent bacterial cause of pharyngitis.

A severe potential sequelae of group A strep infection is acute rheumatic fever (ARF). In an effort to reduce the incidence of ARF, it is important to accurately diagnose GAS infection and treat appropriately with antibiotics. Empirical treatment often leads to inappropriate use of antibiotics.
