About Chlamydia

Chlamydia is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis and is the most frequently reported bacterial sexually transmitted disease in the U.S. An estimated 2.8 million Americans are infected each year.1

Chlamydia is often called a "silent" disease because it usually does not produce symptoms. If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to serious health problems in women, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can cause permanent damage to a woman's reproductive organs, which can lead to chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and potentially fatal ectopic pregnancy.1 Chlamydia can be passed from a pregnant mother to her unborn child; in fact, chlamydia is a leading cause of early infant pneumonia and conjunctivitis in newborns.1

Annual screening for chlamydia is recommended for all sexually active women age 25 and younger and for older women with risk factors for chlamydia. All pregnant women should also be screened.1 Once detected, chlamydia can be treated and cured with antibiotics.
