Bladder cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the United States. The NMP22 Test Kit is a painless, low-cost and quantitative tool for the prognosis of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urinary tract, which accounts for more than 90 percent of bladder cancer. A microplate enzyme immunoassay, the test detects elevated levels of NMP22 (nuclear matrix protein), which is found in both normal and cancerous cells of the bladder. Healthy individuals generally have very small amounts of NMP22 protein in the urine. However, the level of NMP22 protein is often elevated in the urine of patients with bladder cancer, even at early stages of the disease. The test is useful in identifying hidden or rapidly recurring disease. It is performed on a single voided urine sample and is twice as sensitive as urine cytology. The use of the NMP22 protein has been FDA-approved four times for various formats and claims.
